Research Results using Bluezone® Fresh Preservation Technology

Refrigerated Storage FFV Research Trials

Introduction

Bluezone units were installed in the produce coolers of the US aircraft carrier fleet and commercial ships to measure the shelf life of FF&V.

Tests conducted measured not only shelf life, but also food safety for the crew.  Mould and ripening were key indicators along with the ability to measure mixed loads in a cooler storage space.  Odours and flavour transfer were also important factors in measuring mixed loads.

Gas Chromatograph - Ethylene Measurement

Bluezone tests showed effective ethylene removal and microbial control from ambient air.  The units had virtually no impact on refrigeration performance or capacity and required minimal power usage.

Temperature stability reduced defrost cycles and enhanced moisture control, for longer distance transportation of sensitive produce. The elimination of ethylene build-up reduced the risk of rapid respiration rate (of a whole load from a few ripe pallets).

Results

Shelf life extension of 7 – 8 days on average and improve food quality for crew.
Some fruits and vegetables had shelf life extensions up to 15 days longer than without Bluezone allowing flexibility in sourcing and transportation of produce.
